‘I love the variety and versatility of Nettle as a herb, and I’m excited to share some of my favourite herbal remedies working alongside this powerful plant.’ – Liz
We’ll begin this workshop by making a simple pamphlet stitch notebook for recording observations, ideas and inspirations throughout the evening. This will incorporate different elements of the nettle, including nettle dyed thread, a leaf print and swatch of nettle seed paper that you can use to grow your own nettle patch at home.
Liz will then walk you through how to make a collection of nettle based remedies that you can take away with you –
- Make a remineralising and rejuvenating Spring-time tonic remedy infusing Nettle and a selection of other seasonal herbs in raw apple cider vinegar
- Craft a tea blend with Nettle and other botanicals for the Spring season
- Create an anti-inflammatory healing balm celebrating Nettle’s healing and anti-inflammatory properties
At the end of the workshop there will be the opportunity to purchase a copy of ‘A Year in Herbs’, an interactive journal written by Liz and illustrated by Kate Millbank, details below.
> This event is part of the ‘Time with Nettles’ exhibition at Mote102, featuring artwork by Cass Barron and Lorna Brown, which you are invited to explore after the workshop.

A Year in Herbs
‘A Year in Herbs’ is an interactive journal written by Liz Thomas and illustrated by Kate Millbank. It introduces you to one herb each month through a collection of recipes, remedies & reflections.
Each of the 12 plants covered can be found growing in the landscape, hedgerows, parks and gardens around you, and can be used to support natural health and wellbeing. The plants are selected for their purpose each month within the cycle of the year, and which can be found growing across the British Isles. Inspired by the landscape of East Lothian, this truly is a creative collaboration where Liz and Kate share their passion for the natural world.
Each month is set out over 4 weeks: with an introduction to the herb, a recipe, a remedy, and a reflection. There’s space to add your own notes, memories and observations, and the journal is beautifully illuminated with linocut prints by Kate throughout. It doesn’t contain dates, so you can begin in any month and enjoy a year of herbs starting any time.
