This workshop invites you to spend some time with nettles – take part in a guided plant study, led by Lynda Hepburn and make a simple nettle themed notebook with Cass to record your observations.

Cass will start the session by sharing how to make a pamphlet stitch book that you can work into during our time together. Lynda will then provide you with nettles to observe and as a group we will contribute to a guided study, working from the roots up to the topmost spring leaves, noticing all the little details that normally escape our attention.

By noticing more and building up a holistic picture of nettles, we will learn how nettles grow and spread, how they change through the year and what “character” they have. You will be encouraged to make sketches in your pamphlet book, or to include pressed leaves to record the observations. If time permits we can also produce some abstract art to capture our feeling of the essence of nettle.

Gloves will be provided to avoid nettle stings while handling the plants.

> Lynda trained initially in ecology before working for twenty years on the plants of the Scottish Highlands for conservation. She also trained in the special plant study methods first proposed by Goethe – in truth the father of Slow Botany. She has taught this method for many years to varied groups and is now running plant study courses based in Portobello, Edinburgh.

This event is part of the ‘Time with Nettles’ exhibition at Mote102, featuring artwork by Cass Barron and Lorna Brown, open from 18-26 April.

Please note: this workshop is aimed at adults. Tickets are non-refundable. You will receive a reminder email in the run up to the event with more details, if you have any questions in the meantime, please get in touch.

> Places limited to 10 participants.
