A bit more about the book and my creative process…
I often talk about the simple joy of cutting and sticking in my workshops and how, as adults, we often need permission to play and enjoy the process of making art. So back in March 2026, in need of some creative play time myself, I decided to practice what I preach – this saw me gathering a selection of old envelopes and giving myself a day in the studio, without a plan for what the outcome would be.
There is something quite magical about letting materials lead you, getting lost in the process of cutting and sticking as you reconfigure what would have otherwise been discarded into something new. As I was making I thought about the journeys the envelopes had been on, the buildings and hands they may have passed through and the stories they could tell.
When I unfolded my newly created street scene to take some photos, a shaft of sunlight came pouring through the window and brought it to life, casting shadows of the rooftops onto the table top and animating the cut outs. It was as if a little paper person could emerge at any moment from one of the open doors. I really enjoyed the theatre of this – it took me right back to being engrossed in a book as a child, seeing magical worlds and made up places pop out from the page and take shape in my mind.
I like the idea that for this small collection of envelopes, their story didn’t end in the recycling bin – instead they have been repurposed into something playful, maybe even magical in the right light, with a new story to tell.
The accordion book format allows you to flick through the individual buildings in the palm of your hand, or unfold fully to display standing upright, allowing you to see all 18 buildings together.
