This series of botanical artworks feature detailed leaf prints shaded with coloured pencil. The originals were made in situ and consist of three site specific hand-pressed prints:
My Sisters Garden – using leaves from my sisters garden in Perth, Australia
Among the Vines – made with vine leaves from the Swan Valley wine region in Western Australia
On my Doorstep – featuring cuttings from my garden in Newhaven
The circular frame is suggestive of a looking glass or petri dish, drawing the eye inwards to the intricate outlines and vein structures of the leaf specimens within.
Using relief printing to capture the micro details of plants I come across in my everyday, helps deepen my understanding and appreciation of the local ecosystem, often prompting research into the edible and medicinal uses of plants as well as the folklore that surrounds them.
I like to think that the spherical nature of these prints also reference planets and in doing so expresses the important role that plants play in our everyday lives and to life on earth.
As Scottish born Sir Patrick Geddes, botanist, biologist, town planner and landscape architect, put it ‘“The leaf is the chief product and phenomenon of Life: this is a green world, with animals comparatively few and small, and all dependent upon the leaves”.
Please note: I have included the title of each piece on the image to indicate which is which, this title does not appear on the giclée print. The title and a signature will be handwritten on the back of the print.
Spec: these crisp giclée prints are A3 in size, onto 310gsm museum heritage paper with a slight texture. They can be framed as A3 and also work well trimmed to fit a square frame.
Cost & postage
The prints cost £50 each, plus UK postage (£5.05 1st class, £3.50 2nd class). These are printed to order at Inlet Leith – I will aim to get them posted out to you within 10 days of ordering.
If you are based outside the UK and would like to purchase one or more prints, please email me at bookbindingwithcass @ gmail.com and I will calculate shipping costs and send you a payment link.
Your purchase means a lot and will enable me to keep supporting people to explore their creativity and be inspired by nature and pre-loved materials through my workshops and community projects.
Looking for a unique gift or personalised print? I also do circular botanical prints by commission, which can feature leaves from your own garden, currently available in Edinburgh and the surrounding area only, as this includes a site visit where I will do the print in situ. Prices start at £150.
