Japanese stab binding is a most satisfying way of binding single sheets of paper together, characterised by an exposed spine with stitch patterns that range from simple to intricate and down right mind boggling! In this collection of video tutorials I share my upcycled take on three of my favourite Japanese stab stitches –
Four Hole Straight Stitch and Zig Zag Stitch featuring a collaged paperback cover, beaded page divider and wrap around fastening, followed by a more advanced Hemp Leaf Binding with hardback hinged cover, incorporating remnant fabric, pockets, page divider and ribbon fastening.
Japanese stab bound books make great notebooks, sketchbooks and personalised gifts! You can use plain paper for your pages or experiment with binding together photographs / prints / text / sketches / postcards to create your own publication (all the pages just need to be the same size).
Once you have mastered the techniques covered in my videos, you can mix and match your newfound skills and experiment making books in different shapes and sizes, I can’t wait to see your creations!

How this course is taught?
This course is taught via a series of step-by-step video tutorials, accompanied by a downloadable document with links to recommended suppliers and advice on sourcing & prepping materials.
You will have continued access to my video tutorials via a password protected page on my website, which means you can revisit my videos for a reminder of the process whenever you need – I only ask that you please don’t share log in details with friends or third parties, doing so will result in you losing access. You will also have access to the private Bookbinding with Cass Facebook page where you can share your makes, ask questions and get ideas as you progress through the course.
Materials

- Grey board for hardback book covers, 2mm thick (the back of an old calendar or sketchpad will work nicely)
- Plain paper for pages
- Thin card for paperback cover
- Thin cotton fabric for hardback cover
- A mix of coloured threads for stitching your books (embroidery thread works well for this)
- Decorative papers to decorate
- Glue stick
- Wet glue such as UHU or PVA
- Double sided adhesive sheet
- Ribbon, split pins, beads for finishing touches
