This free online workshop has been created for adults and children – a fun project that sees a sheet of A4 paper transform into a sculptural street scene, complete with a matchbox book case to store it in.
An invitation to be inspired by storytelling, books and words, using techniques such as folding, cutting, writing, drawing and sticking to breathe new life into remnant and recycled papers.
>This project is part of the Fair Saturday Scotland Kindness of Words programme, which aims to encourage the telling and sharing of stories together.
Kindness is at the very heart of Fair Saturday and a big part of what makes us who we are as a country. We can show kindness in lots of different ways, but being creative and sharing stories and songs that celebrate our culture and our diverse communities is a great way to start.
The theme for Kindness of Words this year is the joy of libraries! Libraries are magical places of discovery; places where you will always receive a warm welcome, and so much more.
Fair Saturday Scotland have created a Family & Carer Activity Pack to inspire and encourage you to get out and explore Edinburgh’s incredible libraries and see what they have to offer, as well as imagine and create your own libraries at home. You can find all the Kindness of Words resources on the Fair Saturday website – standrews.fairsaturday.org
Many thanks to the City of Edinburgh Council for funding and supporting this project, and to all the libraries for everything they do at the heart of their communities.
My video bitesize video tutorials take you through the making process from start to finish with tips and ideas to help you along the way.
Your book can be as simple or detailed as you choose to make it, at a minimum it will take 2 hours and at the max you could spend a whole day or afternoon creating your book. You might want to use this as an opportunity to get creative on your own or why not get together with a group of friends or family to make together and share ideas and materials.
What tools/materials do I need?
This project is all about using what you have to hand, my videos give you some ideas of where to find remnant materials to decorate your book and the other tools/materials required should be easy to source if you don’t already have them –
- 3 pieces of A4 paper – ideally paper with a bit of weight to it, in my video I use 170gsm white recycled cartridge paper. Copy paper will work but paper with a bit of thickness gives a nice finish.
- Scissors
- A good quality glue stick
- Ruler
- Pencil/pen
- Bone folder (if you have one), if not a ruler or similar can be used
- Collage materials – see my video ‘Collage materials – some ideas’
