An exhibition of new work by Cassandra Barron and Lorna Brown at Mote102, Edinburgh, accompanied by a series of creative workshops and film screening of The Nettle Dress.
“I really like the constraint of picking a specific plant as a source of inspiration and springboard for making new work. More specifically a native, everyday plant, so often dismissed as a ‘weed’ to be eradicated. When you look closer, it is a thing of beauty with a rich cultural history, from its medicinal and creative uses to its valuable role in our ecosystem and the folklore around it.
In creating work for this exhibition I am enjoying exploring themes of transformation, repetition and scale, pushing my work beyond the book form and seeing where this takes me.”
– Cass
“The new pieces I have created for this exhibition reference history, folklore, botany and delve into recurring themes about transition and protection. Inspired by the opposing nature of the nettle to protect and attack, to be soft and prickly, to inflict pain but to have vast healing qualities, to be a sanctuary but also a repellent, is just a very small list of its fascinating qualities.”
– Lorna
